Our Board of Directors

Legal Services for Children is supported and governed past a volunteer Board of Directors. The Board meets quarterly to review LSC'southward programs and services, and ensures its fiscal health.

Ann Alpers

Ann is the president and CEO of the Southward.H. Cowell Foundation. Prior to joining the Cowell Foundation in 2005, she was a faculty member at the University of California, San Francisco where she taught health law and medical ethics. She has been a visiting professor at Stanford Law School, St. Louis University Police force School, and the Academy of California, Berkeley. In 1999, Ann took a breather to hold public function during which she served in the San Francisco City Attorney's Office as Deputy City Attorney for Health and Human Services. In addition to chairing the LSC Board of Directors, Ann serves on the Boards of the Marin Country 24-hour interval Schoolhouse and the Greenwall Foundation.

Lily Eagle Dorman Colby

Vice Chair

Lily has lived experience as a foster parent and foster kid. Lily founded With Lived Experience, an organization that helps people change systems that have impacted them. In their career, Lily has worked in direct service not-profits, advocacy organizations, and in legislative offices. Their piece of work has led to state and federal policy changes in the areas of foster and kinship intendance.

Almost recently, through membership on the American Bar Association's (ABA) Commission on Youth at Risk, Lily assisted in drafting ABA Resolution 115. It calls for legal system reform efforts in child welfare, juvenile justice, and clearing law to be led by, or conducted in partnership with, individuals who accept experienced those legal systems every bit children or youth.

In 2021, the team at with Lived Experience edited the ABA'due south September issue of Homo Rights Magazine, which included a piece authored by Lily, chosen "We Deserve Platinum."

Lily obtained a B.A. in Economic science from Yale University and a J.D. from UC Berkeley Schoolhouse of Law. They previously served as an Equal Justice Works Beau at the National Center for Youth Constabulary and the Youth Law Center.

Paul Herman

Paul Herman is a total-time parent, customs volunteer, and an aspiring writer. He holds a PhD in American history from Stanford University and a MA in religious studies from the Pacific School of Religion, in Berkeley. Before his academic career, Paul worked primarily in local and state politics, focusing on AIDS-related policy and HIV prevention. He also helped organize the kickoff national coalition of AIDS-related organizations in South Africa. Paul served as an active volunteer for his daughters' schools, Pacific Main and Marin Country Solar day School, including a term on the lath at MCDS. He and his husband, Ed Swanson, accept supported LSC for several years. In 2019, Paul served as co-chair, with Darren Teshima, of the LSC annual-event committee. Paul and Ed live in Manufacturing plant Valley with their two daughters, Liza and Katherine.

Mikiko Huang

Lath Secretarial assistant

Mikiko is a pediatrician on the attention staff of the CPMC in San Francisco and has a stiff commitment to community involvement and social justice. She currently serves on the Board of the S. H. Cowell Foundation. She is President of the Lath of At Dwelling house with Growing Older. She has also been part of the SF Crumbling and Disability Friendly Work Group. She is a Wellness and Editorial Advisor to Common Sense Media. She is the firsthand by Chair of the Board of the Friends of the SF Public Library. She has besides served on the Boards of Camp Tawonga, and Marin Country Mean solar day School (MCDS). Advocating on behalf of children and their families in a variety of ways is a high priority for her.

Scott D. Karchmer

Scott is a Partner and the pro bono chair of Morgan Lewis's San Francisco office. He counsels emerging and established companies in concern transactions. Representing clients in the biotechnology, medical device, software, information analytics, and networking and storage industries, he advises companies at critical junctures in their lifecycles. In addition to serving on LSC's Board of Directors, Scott volunteers for the Alameda County Food Banking concern.

Sharon Meadows

Sharon is the director of the Criminal Juvenile Justice Clinics at the USF School of Law. She was appointed by Chief Estimate Robert Peckham of the U.s.a. Commune Court for the Northern Commune of California as the compliance monitor for a Championship Seven Consent Decree in the construction industry, and earlier that worked equally a country and federal public defender. In 1994, she assisted in the establishment of a Criminal/Juvenile Law Dispensary at the Academy of the West Greatcoat in Southward Africa, and returned to Southward Africa in 1998 and 2002 to assist in the establishment of a pilot public defender system. Sharon continued assisting with the development of juvenile youth court systems in Southward Africa from 2004 to 2006. She was also Main Counsel at the Bayview Hunter's Point Community Defender for several years.

Puppet Mills

Puppet is a total-time software tester in the tech industry in San Francisco. She is currently an SF CASA volunteer every bit a court appointed special advocate. She has a strong desire to contribute to and collaborate with organizations supporting underserved youth. She has previous feel with foster intendance, adolescent handling facilities and the juvenile justice system every bit a youth in Reno, NV. She is also a office-time filmmaker and storyteller.

John O'Toole

John was the Managing director of the National Eye for Youth Police (NCYL) for 35 years from 1980 to 2015. James Schurz

James is a Partner at Morrison & Foerster where he represents clients in federal and state courts in the areas of consumer protection, advertising, product liability, environmental, and food constabulary. He is an agile member of the LSC Pro Bono Panel, and in 2014, received the Pro Bono Leadership Honour in recognition of his advancement, leadership, and extraordinary commitment to the children of the Bay Area.

Janet Sherwood

January is currently Deputy Manager at Advokids. She has over 40 years of experience working in child welfare law and is a nationally recognized expert on child welfare constabulary. Her experience includes an in-firm counsel job at the State Department of Social Services, serving as a Deputy Chaser General representing various state wellness, education, and welfare agencies, and more than xx years in private law exercise in which she represented parties in both the trial and appellate courts. She is an NACC certified Child Welfare Police Specialist (CWLS), accredited by the State Bar of California'southward Board of Legal Specialization and the ABA, and a co-founder of Advokids. Ms. Sherwood is also a consultant, trainer, proficient witness, and frequent speaker on child welfare issues.

Suzanne Stuckwisch

Board Treasurer

Sue is a Managing director at Alvarez and Marsal, a global consulting firm specializing in business organisation advisory services. Sue's work focuses on the awarding of economics, finance, statistics, and valuation principles to questions that ascend in the context of litigation. She has testified on economic amercement in state and federal court in patent infringement, trade surreptitious theft, commercial litigation, fraud, and employment disputes. Prior to litigation consulting, Sue worked as a mechanical engineer on the design of nuclear submarines. To balance her daily litigation piece of work, Sue is a certified Bikram Yoga teacher. She joined the Board in 2011.

Darren Teshima

Darren is a Partner at Orrick, Herrington & Sutcliffe LLP, where he practices commercial litigation and insurance recovery. He specializes in representing policyholders in the financial services, technology, retail, and hospitality industries in disputes with insurance companies. Darren likewise has an active pro bono exercise, and is a two-time recipient of LSC's Pro Bono Advocate Accolade. He has handled administrative trials and hearings on behalf of asylum seekers, depression-income tenants, and has provided litigation advice to non-profit organizations. Darren also serves on the Boards of Asian Americans Advancing Justice – Asian Law Conclave and the Middle for Gender & Refugee Studies.

Kim Thompson

Chair

Kim is PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC)'s Global Advisory Take chances & Quality Leader and the member of the Office of the Global Full general Counsel primarily responsible for advising the Global Advisory (deals and consulting) do. In these roles, she focuses on quality initiatives and managing risk and legal issues for PwC's Advisory exercise beyond the global network of PwC firms. In 2012, the San Francisco Business concern Times named Kim equally one of the 150 Most Influential Women in Business. In 2013 Kim received Friends of Oakland Parks & Recreation's almanac Ann Woodell Community Award and was an honoree at the 2013 Oakland Parks and Recreation Salute to Excellence and Community Spirit. In 2013, Kim was also named California Constabulary Review's Alumna of the Twelvemonth. In addition to her service on LSC'due south Board, Kim also serves on the S.H. Cowell Foundation Board and she is a member of the President's Quango of Cornell Women.

Susan Tunnell

Susan is a sometime business & technology lawyer who hails from Montreal, Quebec. She was an associate at Cooley Godward LLP, and subsequently worked in business development at startup technology companies. She nigh recently served as a career counselor at UC Hastings College of the Law, developing job opportunities for graduating students in commercial and non-profit settings. Susan currently volunteers equally a career mentor with Summertime Search and New Door Ventures in San Francisco.

Grace Won

Grace K. Won is a pro bono volunteer for Legal Services for Children. She was previously in individual practice as a litigation partner with Farella, Braun + Martel. At Farella, Grace she served as pro bono chair and the business firm'due south hiring partner. She has been named by the Daily Journal as one of the top 75 women litigators in California, and prior to joining Farella, she was a police force clerk for the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals and the Southern District of California. Grace too produces and hosts City Visions, a alive radio show on NPR affiliate, KALW 91.vii San Francisco. She currently serves on the lath of Children Now, the Gilt Gate National Parks Conservancy, and the Presidio Heights Association of Neighbors and previously chaired the boards of San Francisco Day School and Cow Hollow Schoolhouse. Grace graduated cum laude from Harvard University, and has a MA in English language from Academy College London and a JD from Georgetown University. She and her husband, Richard Holden, have two children and have lived in San Francisco for over 20 years.

Christopher Wu

Chris is a onetime Executive Director of LSC. He currently serves as Director of Government Relations at the National Center for State Courts. Previously, he was Senior Manager on the Judicial Appointment Team at Casey Family Programs. Chris also served equally Supervising Attorney at the California Judicial Quango Center for Families, Children and the Courts and Executive Director of the California Blue Ribbon Commission on Children in Foster Care. Chris is the Lath Secretarial assistant and joined the LSC Lath in September 1996. He is Past President of the National Clan of Counsel for Children, Vice President on the Lath of the National Center for Youth Law, and former President of the Northern California Association of Counsel for Children.

Asa Wynn-Grant

Asa Wynn Grant is an acquaintance at DLA Piper, where he practices patent litigation and pre-litigation investigations. He specializes in representing technology companies defending federal district court lawsuits and ITC investigations. Asa besides has an active pro bono practise, and is a recipient of LSC'southward Pro Bono Leadership Award and DLA Piper'due south National Pro Bono Honour. Christopher Zand

Chris Zand is the Managing director or Private Client relations at Osterweis Capital Direction. Mr. Zand graduated from University of California, Berkeley (B.A. in Political Scientific discipline) and from Santa Clara University School of Law (J.D.). Prior to joining Osterweis in 2018, Mr. Zand was Vice President and Principal at Brouwer & Janachowski, LLC, where he specialized in providing investment planning and management services to individuals, families, foundations and endowments, and helped formulate the firm's investment strategy as a member of the Investment Committee. Prior to that, he was a Vice President with Bernstein Global Wealth Management and led a individual client investment management team, providing financial and strategic planning communication to high internet worth families and foundations. Mr. Zand is too a fellow member of the Board of Directors for the International House at U.C. Berkeley.
